- An Altostratus chinook arch cloud fills the first lee wave crest aloft downwind from a mountain range. The clear gap is where subsiding air (and adiabatic warming) prevents any clouds from forming or surviving. As the flow rises again into the wave crest, it condenses along the sheet’s far edge.
