- Vertical wind shear. A uniform increase in wind speed with height above cloud base causes vertical cloud elements to lean forward in a smooth arc. Towers appear to roll forward while new updrafts take their place. Here, six separate updrafts above a single Cumulus Congestus base are carried up and swept forward by the wind shear.
