- The formation of anvils on convective clouds, sign of an inversion
- W930851Z
- Inversion. A sure sign of an inversion is the formation of anvils on convective clouds. The updraft spreads out when it decelerates on arrival at a more stable level, which slows or stops the upward motion. The cloudy air then spreads laterally as an anvil cloud. These pudging Cumulus clouds have small, flat Altocumulus anvils at an inversion.
